Wolfe City -- Memorial services for Hal Mullins, 80, will be held at 2pm, Wednesday, October 17at the First Baptist Church of Wolfe City. Internment will immediately follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery under the direction of R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home. Mr. Mullins died Friday, October 12 in Bonham, Texas.

Born August 25, 1927 in Dallas, Texas Hal was the son of R. L. Mullins and Nola Mullins. R. L. Mullins was the long time president of the Wolfe City National Bank and Nola Mullins managed many retail businesses in Wolfe City over the years. He was preceded in death by two older brothers, Jack Mullins of Wolfe City and Neill Mullins of Marshall, Texas.

Hal was born in Dallas but grew up in Wolfe City and graduated from Wolfe City High School in 1944. That same year he was one of the first people to ever receive a State Future Farmers of America degree, a distinction that gave him pride. Following his high school graduation Hal attended Texas A&M where he was a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Band. His young cocker spaniel, Freckles, became the Texas A&M mascot living in the barracks, and marched with the band on the field.

During the summer prior to his graduation Hal served in the Merchant Marines with his long time friend Bobby Owens of Wolfe City. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Husbandry in 1948 and then entered service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Freckles accompanied Hal during this time and was also later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Ft. Ord California.

Hal had the unusual distinction of being in New York City during the VE Day celebration and then being in San Francisco on VJ Day. He even celebrated his 18th birthday by passing under the Golden Gate Bridge at 10:00 a.m. on a military transport.

After his military service ended he owned and operated a lumberyard in Wylie, Texas along with his father and became quite an expert in the building materials industry where his keen mathematical abilities complimented his good business sense. In 1950 Hal was called back into military service by the US Army during the Korean War and served as the recruiting officer for the state of New Mexico.

He moved back to Texas following his final discharge in 1952. He soon became a professional salesman serving as a manufacturer's representative to several companies over the years in Alabama, Georgia and Florida. During this time a product he invented was patented that allowed for the temporary positioning of pre-made roof trusses during the homebuilding process.

During his time in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Hal met Hildegard Moedinger, from Stuttgart, Germany. Hal and Hildegard were married in Wolfe City on June 6, 1964. They resided in Valdosta, Georgia where their only child, Michael, was born in June of 1968. Shortly after his birth the family trio moved to Wolfe City, as it was to become their permanent home.

Hal retired from the US Post Office in 1999. He then spent a great many hours reminiscing through words. Hal was an accomplished writer and had written in excess of two thousand poems and short stories. Many of these were related to his wonderful experiences growing up in Wolfe City. They spoke of that time in history and the colorful characters that he encountered along his path. A great many of these have been published in the Wolfe City Mirror and other local newspapers.

His great memories and friendships with life long residents of Hunt County led Hal to donate significantly to the community. This includes street lights and a clock in the downtown area, the flag pole at the new Wolfe City High School and his parent's, R. L. and Nola Mullins, estate property near downtown to be used as a community center and local museum.

Memorials may be directed to this future museum in care of Bobby Owens of R. W. Owens and Son Funeral Home, Disabled Veteran's National Service Foundation at 3725 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, KY 41076 or to the donor's choice.
