Reta was born in Becontree Heath London, England, on 18 July 1916. Daughter of Conrad David John Westwood and Lilian Maud (Brown) from Barking, England. She was nine years old when she arrived in Canada in October 1928 with her mother, sister Lilian, brothers Kenneth and Ernest aboard the "SS Antonia" from Liverpool, England. Her death certificate is missing the year of her birth and inaccurately lists her at the time of death as 71 years old; she was 21 years old when she died and was buried in her wedding dress. She died of acute myocarditis caused by rheumatic fever's chronic endocarditis. On 5 November 1937, she was laid to rest at Park Lawn Cemetery.
