Wendell Arthur Dutton was the first of three sons of John Clinton Dutton Jr. & Bertha Alice Shutes. Proud mother Bertha & baby Wendell are shown at left. At age 22, he married 13 August 1927 to Hattie Mae Bumbarger; 4 children: Mary Elisabeth, Vivian Bernita, Neva Mildred, and Wendell Arthur Dutton (his posthumous son born 9 April 1932).

Wendell senior, age 26, died of peritonitis following an emergency appendectomy after his horse kicked him in the stomach and ruptured his appendix. He was in his hog lot at the time; he lay on the ground, unable to move. The always-hungry hogs wanted to attack him, but his brave, loyal dog kept them at bay. Wendell's pregnant wife Hattie finally went outside to see why the dog was barking continually. Wendell was taken to the hospital in Marshalltown, where he later died.
