Alton was the oldest of the Hall children. He worked for the railroad in Benson and accidentally had his foot nearly torn off. He used the money given to him by the railroad to send himself to Wake Forest College. He went to the law school there without graduating with an undergraduate degree. He was elected County Auditor in Wake County. He died of lung cancer at the age of 64.
