Died January 3, 2021 from COVID-19, aged 82. John was the younger son of John D. and Miriam Coombs.

John was a 1956 graduate of Woodbury (CT) High School, where his father was the principal and his mother taught English. He attended Middlebury (VT) College and married fellow Class of 1960 member, Linda Fiske of Weybridge, VT, in 1959. After the couples’ graduation, John spent most of his career working for the American Heart Association in locations throughout the Northeast. John and Linda had four children and were married for 31 years before divorcing in 1990. In 1991, John married Mrs. Barbara “Bunny” D. Walters of Albany, GA, and they remained married for 28 years until her death in 2019. In the latter part of his life, John enjoyed working for the Better Business Bureau of Macon, GA. John was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity, Lions Club International, the Fraternal Order of Masons, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his brother, Allan Coombs; his aunt, Florence C. Diane; and his niece, Heather Coombs. John is survived by children, Richard (Sherrie) Coombs, Janet Coombs, Katherine (Michael) Cline, and David (Sandra) Ryder; step-children, Gus (Beth) Walters, Tori Walters, Kristine (Mark) Parsons; his nephew, Donald Coombs; numerous grandchildren; and dear friend, Suzanne Bennett of Rochester, NY.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that claimed his life, funeral services will not be conducted at this time and will likely take place in John’s home town of Woodbury, CT in August 2021. His ashes will be laid to rest in the New North Cemetery in Woodbury, where John worked as a groundskeeper in his teenage years.
