Thomas Wayne Quinn, 72 of Jefferson City, MO, formerly of Centralia, MO and from Monroe City, MO passed away at 5:17 PM Sunday, December 6, 2020 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City, MO.

A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church at Indian Creek, MO. Private Burial will be at St. Stephen’s Church Cemetery at Indian Creek, MO. Fr. Mike Quinn will officiate.

Tom was born on August 30, 1948 in Hannibal, MO to Walter Quinn and Loretta Williams Quinn.

He was married on June 29, 1968 to Mary Yates at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Monroe City, MO. She survives.

Also surviving are four children: David Quinn (Jennifer) of Bloomington, IL, Angela Whitehair (Kenneth) of Las Vegas, NV, Amy Smith (Sonny) of West Plains, MO and Doug Quinn (Holly) of Mesa, AZ; five brothers: Nick Quinn of Houston, TX, Kenneth Quinn (Marilyn) of Springfield, MO, Paul Quinn (Deanna) of Palmyra, MO, Robert Quinn (Debra) of Monroe City, MO and Christopher Quinn of Monroe City, MO; nine grandchildren: Bailey Quinn, Kaitlyn Quinn, Quinten Whitehair, Parker Whitehair, Samantha Whitehair, Taylor Cecil, Emily Cecil, Aiden Quinn, and Alex Quinn. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his father in law, Harry Yates, mother in law, Maria Yates and his brother, Jack Quinn.

Tom was a lifelong educator. He began his career in 1970 teaching sixth grade with the National Teacher Corp Program in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1972 Tom moved his family to Centralia Missouri where he began teaching fifth grade and went on to further his career in Centralia as the Elementary School Principal, High School Principal and retiring as Superintendent of Schools for the Centralia R-VI Public Schools in 2000. From 2001-2010 Tom worked for The Department of Elementary & Secondary Education in Jefferson City, Missouri where he served as the Director of School Governance and then Assistant Commissioner for the Division of Career Education. During the last 5 years Tom served as the Executive Director and CFO of the Missouri Educators’ Unified Health Plan.

Throughout his life Tom was extremely passionate about volunteering and service to the communities in which he lived. Tom made a lasting impact in numerous lives through his leadership with the student foreign exchange program sponsored by the Jefferson City Breakfast Rotary Club. Volunteer work in Habitat for Humanity homes was Tom’s most recent contribution to the community.

Away from work, Tom loved to spend time together with his family. He was very proud of his family’s heritage and was particularly fond of his days growing up in the Indian Creek (Swinkey) Community. A world traveler in his later years, Tom enjoyed adventures with his family, but the trips he cherished most were those to visit his grandchildren. An avid gardener, Tom always loved to share the fruits of his labor with his family and friends. Tom was a voracious reader of local, state, and global news and current events regarding education, politics, social causes, and sports. A true sports fan at heart, Tom followed his children and grandchildren’ s activities and kept up with his favorite local teams, the Centralia Panthers, Monroe City Panthers, Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. A gifted singer, Tom also enjoyed music and fondly remembered singing with his brothers as they were accompanied by their mother on the piano. Tom’s most cherished moments were those he shared with family and friends.

Tom was a member of the St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin, MO.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas Quinn Scholarship for Centralia High School students pursuing a career in education.
