Edna was the eleventh, and last child of Augustus and Virginia Britt Stephenson. She was born 24-May-1877 on the family farm just north of Pendelton, NC and died on 28-Dec-1948 in Raleigh, NC. Having been the youngest of eleven children, her older sisters, Alice, 22, Sarah, 19, and Ada, took care of her during her entire childhood. Due to the age of her mother when she was born, and the fact that she had been small at birth, she was never a very healthy person. She admitted to me that, as a young girl, she pulled on her ear lobes when she was nervous and had developed exceptionally long ear lobes later in life. She graduated from Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC, and received excellent grades. She majored in music and learned to play the piano extremely well. She became a teacher of general subjects as well as music. Soon after her graduation, she accepted the position of teacher of general subjects at a school in Brunswick County near Winnabow, NC.
