Leonard Fred Vajgrt was the son of Fred Vajgrt & Anna Cizek. During World War II, he enlisted at age 18 on 27 August 1943, at Camp Dodge northwest of Des Moines, Iowa, in the U.S. Army Air Corps, "for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law." He served on the European front with the 36th "Texas" Division of the 141st Army Infantry. In 1944, he was wounded in battle in Italy during the Anzio invasion, for which he received the Purple Heart.

On June 2, 1946 in the Presbyterian Church at Conrad, Iowa, Leonard married Darleen Lucille Coulter (1927-1986), who is buried beside him.
