On 1 January 1880, the patent of the Queen’s theatre was assigned to Ellis Jones by the executors of the late John Charles Joseph, his wife’s father. Then, in early 1884 Ellis was granted a lease of the theatre until 1907.
He appointed James William Whitbread, an actor, playwright and theatre manager to be the manager of the Queen’s.
From then until 1906, the pair transformed the fortunes of the theatre and their 22 years in charge would become the most productive and important period of the theatre’s entire history. It is no exaggeration to say that The Queen’s Royal Theatre became one of most important theatres of the period.
