Thomas Maurice Murdock, 78, of Nella, Arkansas, died Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Maurice, as he was known by family and his childhood friends, went by the name Tom in later years. He was born at home at the Hester Nursery in Seabrook, Harris County, Texas, to Ruth (Hester) Murdock and William Boyd Murdock, Sr., on the 4th of July, 1941.
He attended the University of Texas and the University of Houston. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospitalman 2nd. Class on the USS Arcturus. His ship was part of the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He had great stories about his Mediterranean tour.
He married Patricia A. Duncan on January 3, 1962, at Seabrook Methodist Church, while on a short leave from the Navy. They've never told us where they honeymooned.
He was a Dallas police officer in the 1960's, a business man, farmer, artisan, publisher, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He could fix anything, but always had to warn you "there's a trick to it" when he finished the repair. He was a good neighbor, a great friend and a wonderful human being. Each of his children and grandchildren cherish those times when they got him all to themselves.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pat Murdock and his children: Kelly Murdock-Billy and Charley Billy, of Bozeman, Montana; Bart and Melissa Murdock of Benton, Arkansas; Sarah and Shane Davis of Parks, Arkansas; and Emily Murdock of Waldron, Arkansas. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jordan and Amber Davis, of Hackett; Courtney and Brad Jett of Waldron; Bret Murdock, Caitlin Murdock, Braden Murdock, and Meagan Murdock, all of Benton; Amy Parkhurst Morris, Eric Parkhurst, Jared Parkhurst and Hallie Parkhurst, all of Waldron. His great-grandchildren are Kaity, Addalee and Westin Jett, Lauren Shores, and Eliyahu, Ezra and Layah Davis. He is also survived by special cousins Beth Hester and Janet and Steve Sherwood, all of Sunsites, Arizona; Barbara Moore Kauffman of Grapevine, Texas; Fred and Edie Moore of Belen, New Mexico, and Bill Detty and Ron Glass of Longview, Texas. His surviving nieces and nephews are: Wendy Murdock Russ of Conway; Jon Murdock of Heber Springs; Meredith Beene, Melissa Beene Ford and Betsy Beene Barry, all of Tyler, Texas. His grandnieces and -nephews are Jay and Krista Murdock of Clinton, Julius Russ and Tristan Russ, of Conway, Jonathan Murdock of Topeka, Kansas, Maddix Murdock of Morrilton, Aurianna Murdock of McCrory, Devonte Murdock of Jonesboro, Isaiah Burt of Greers Ferry, Abraham Wolfe of Marshall, Arkansas, Gabriel Reynolds of Bakersfield, California and Brianna Dakota Murdock of Lyman, Utah.
He was pre-deceased by his parents; his grandparents William Bozars Murdock, Mamie Jones Murdock Syphrett, James Joseph Hester, Jr., and Sarah Amelia Cocke Hester; his brother, William Boyd Murdock, Jr; his aunts and uncles: James Joseph Hester III, Doris Bennett Hester, Annie Orlean Murdock, Lucile Murdock Moore, and Nancy Syphrett Detty; his grandson Gabriel James Billy; his nephew Kyle Larry Murdock and his grandnieces Tonya Murdock and Janine Murdock.
A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the Fort Smith National Cemetery.
