Betty Raines Shipmon of Memphis, TN went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 17, 2020 at Methodist Hospital, Germantown, TN, at the age of 98. She was born December 31, 1921 in Memphis, Tennessee to Cecil Lee and Amanda Moore Raines, both deceased. She graduated from Central High School and attended the State Teacher's College (now University of Memphis). Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Thomas (Tom) Henry Shipmon, Jr., DDS, her brother, Cecil Lee Raines, Jr., DDS (Anne) of Memphis, Tennessee, and sister, Virginia Raines Jeter (William) of New Market, Tennessee. Together Betty and Tom raised, and Betty is survived by, their three children: a son, Thomas (Tommy) H. Shipmon, III, DDS (Brokke), and daughters, Debbie Shipmon Rodda (Warner) and Jennifer Shipmon Flowers (John), all of Memphis, Tennessee. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Thomas (Tee) H. Shipmon, IV (Tracy), Sarah Shipmon Scott (Clay), Craig Alan Owen (Isabelle) of San Antonio, Texas, Warner (Bo) Blanton Rodda, Jr. (Cara) of Chicago, Illinois, Stephen Ashworth Rodda (Shibahn), John (Will) William Flowers III (Faith) of Birmingham, Alabama, and Ruffin Elizabeth Flowers, all of Memphis, Tennessee except as otherwise noted. Betty was especially proud to have lived to be a great-grandmother and is survived by fourteen great-grandchildren. She was a devout Christian, devoted to her Lord and her family. She was a founding member of Christ United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women's Ministries, active in church affairs as well as various other organizations and bible studies. She was also a member of and active in the Arts and Garden Club and the Alliance to the Memphis Dental Society. In her later years Betty took up and found great pleasure in oil painting, and delighted in giving her paintings to her children and other family members. A private graveside service for Betty Raines Shipmon will be held on April 21, 2020 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials be made to Christ United Methodist Church, Memphis Food Bank or to a charity of the donor's choice.
