JANET RANDOLPH DOOHAN-MEYER
November 29, 1928 – November 23, 2019
Our beautiful and talented “Mummie” lived a full life, filled with love, laughter and family. She is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She spent the last 58 years in her home in Southern California and recently moved into her daughter’s home in Gig Harbor.
Judy was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to John Larkin Young and Elisabeth Randolph Barrett and raised nearby in Beaver. She attended high school at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. and was proud to attend her father’s Alma Mater, Indiana University as an Arts Major. Her passion for performing brought her to New York to attend The Neighborhood Playhouse, where she met and soon married James Doohan. They were married in 1949 at her parents’ home in Beaver and moved to Toronto, Canada when they were ready to start a family. They divorced twelve years later, after moving to Van Nuys, California. As a single mom, Judy wore many career hats, including becoming a Realtor and an artist for Disney. In 1985, she married Pastor Richard Meyer and together they raised his youngest son.
After his passing, she picked up the paintbrush again and attended every artist workshop she could find. Judy was a talented author and artist and continued to paint until her passing. Every Christmas she had over a hundred original mini paintings printed and gifted them to her friends and family. She joined the Valley Watercolor Society and won first place for several of her paintings. A highlight of her life was when her children’s book, “Who Lives in Your Backyard” was published in 2016.
Her life was a song, and her operatic voice filled many venues. She was a member and featured soloist for numerous chorales, and musical theatre companies. Judy infused her family with the love of music and the art of performance, inspiring her children to follow in her footsteps.
She loved her family and friends deeply and was very passionate about helping animals. Her dog “Maggie” who will now live with her eldest daughter, was a rescue from “A Purposeful Rescue”.
Our family will be hosting a Celebration of Life on January 5th in Southern California, where we will feature many of her original paintings, sculptures and books. She will be greatly missed.
