He was a son of Joshua Maxwell Taft and Florence Hayden. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in accounting. He was a manager of Breuner's Department Store in San Francisco. He was married at St.Paul's Episcopal Church, Oakland, April 6,1935 to Edith Marion Chamberlin (1905-2004). He was a member of the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club, the Oakland YMCA and served as treasurer of Clausen House. He was also active in the Oakland Rotary Club. The Taft's were the parents of two children, Susan Taft Johnston and Henry Clay Taft ll.
