Polly Ann Ponder Hammock Kingston, 87, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, February 20, 2020.

Polly was born on October 26, 1932, in Athens, Texas, to John Henry and Myrtle Wilburn Ponder. She was the second of five children in her family. In 1938, they moved to Channelview where the Ponder family established their homestead on Avenue D. During her childhood, Polly was a cheerleader and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1951 in Baytown, TX, as Channelview did not yet have a high school.

During her high school years, she met and married Forrest Hammock. They had three children and eventually settled in North Shore. During these years she was involved in hosting many socials for the Rotary Ann’s club and was instrumental in the establishment of Memorial Baptist Church in Channelview. She and Forrest were charter members of the church and she remained a member for many years, serving faithfully every time the doors were open.

Through life’s ups and downs, Polly kept her eyes on Jesus and her family and eventually met and married Morris Kingston of Baytown, TX on June 28, 1968. Together they created a loving environment for their children and eventually their grandchildren. They enjoyed retirement to the fullest and traveled all over the country in their travel trailer. Some of their most cherished memories were spending time in the Texas Hill Country on the Rio Frio River with family and friends.

Polly worked many years in downtown Houston for Precinct 1, Constable Walter Rankin. She loved her working years as she would carpool to and from downtown with her closest friends and sisters. She enjoyed her work and took pride in working for a respected Constable.

Polly had many wonderful qualities about her, and the one that stands out the most was her love for Jesus and her love for family. She loved and served Him faithfully all throughout her life. She stood solid in her faith and knew that no matter what, all things would work out for those that love Him and are called according to His purposes. She loved her family fiercely and always made sure that we knew it! She loved being “Nanny” and cherished time spent with all her kids. The second quality that she will most be remembered by would be her cooking. Polly could “cook up a storm”! Her Thanksgiving pies, red beans, fried chicken and gravy, and mashed potatoes will be sorely missed among friends and family.

Polly loved her sisters and had wonderful times “galivanting” all over town with them, shopping, dressing alike, eating, and just loving being with each other. They were truly the best of friends and were so blessed to have had each other. When the Ponder sisters got together, you just knew there would be some sort of trouble! Oh, how they loved each other.

Polly was happiest when her home was filled with the people she loved, and she was loved by many family members and close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ted Ponder and Jerry Lynn Ponder; husband, Morris Kingston; son, Jeffrey Hammock; and son-in-law, Michael Pettit. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Brenda Pettit and
fiancé Jim Holeman; son, Keith Hammock and wife Lynda; granddaughter, Brandy Worley and husband Josh; granddaughter Shyanne Helton and husband Steve; grandson, William Burton; great-grandchildren Jace Worley, Morgan Worley, and Jacob Helton; two sisters, Patsy Wallace and husband Joe Keith, and Reda Henson and husband Howard; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ponder and Jan Ponder; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.

A celebration of Polly’s life will be on Monday, February 24, 2020 at Dell Dale Avenue Baptist Church, 402 Dell Dale Avenue, Channelview, TX, 77530. Visitation will begin at 9:15 for family and 10:00 for friends. The service will start at 11:00 followed by a graveside service and interment at San Jacinto Memorial Park, 14659 East Freeway, Houston, TX 77015.
