Humberto “Beto” Xavier Yznaga, 88, of Escondido, Calif., formerly of Spring Valley, Calif., died Sunday, February 16, 2020.
Beto was born December 16, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas, the third of seven children of the late Oscar and Ana (Lozano) Yznaga. After high school graduation, he joined the Air Force in 1950. An Air Policeman, he was stationed at Tachikawa AFB in Japan. While in Japan he climbed Mt. Fujiyama, studied Japanese and taught himself to play guitar.
After discharge in 1953, he enrolled at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, majoring in physics and math. In 1957 he began his programming career at Boeing Airplane Company in Seattle.
Beto is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet Lee (Black) Yznaga, daughter of the late Willard and Bernadine Black of Arkansaw, Wis. He is also survived by two sons, Anthony Paul and his wife Laurie Anne Bailey of Escondido Calif., and David Carlos of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Vivian Bailey and Evelyn Lea. Beto’s surviving siblings are his brother Richard Yznaga and his wife, Carmen, and his sister Diana Gomez and her husband, Sergio Gomez, all of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Ana, and four siblings: Oscar Yznaga of Austin, Texas; George Yznaga and Louis Yznaga of San Antonio; Gloria Wheatley of Lubbock, Texas.
Beto’s life and military service will be honored during a ceremony at Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego. Date to be determined.
