Birdie Agnes Lucas Hughes Stone (Granny Stone)

Born to Lee Lucas and Cora Cummins Lucas on January 04, 1895, Birdie was an only child. The family moved to Falmouth in Pendleton County Kentucky in 1901, then lived in Woodford Country and Fayette Country where they arrived on horse drawn wagon in 1910.

Birdie met Dannie Hughes while they were both living on Drew Steele's farm on Yarnelton Pike and they were married in March of 1910.

Birdie and Dannie moved back to New Columbus in Owen County after their marriage. They had four children: William (Bill) Lee Hughes,(1911-1938), Zelma Lillian Hughes Crowe (Barnhill, Crowe) (1914-1993), (Annie May)Anna Mae Hughes Fryer(1916-1995), and Dorman Dee Hughes,(1924-1950); four grandchildren: Judith Ann Fryer, Brenda Gail Hughes, David Dodd Hughes [Wade], and William Dee (Billy) Fryer; and three great-grandchildren: DeONa Marie Stratton, Joseph Donald (Jodee) Stratton, and Melissa Ann Fryer.

Birdie worked at a Lexington Laundry, for Turf Catering Company, and finally at Joyland Park, the amusement park on Paris Pike in Lexington where she was known to all as 'Granny Stone'.

After moving to Walnut Street in Lexington, Birdie met Al Smita Stone and they were married November 02, 1951 in Jeffersonville, Tennessee. Al preceded her in death in 1972. Birdie remained at that residence until her death from coronary failure in 1982.

Granny Stone was my maternal grandmother.

My heartfelt thanks and deepest appreciation go to Julie, the very special person, who sponsored this memorial for my wonderful granny.
