The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, September 10, 1959
Funeral services were held in the Nora Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, for Mrs. Charles Smith, 90, who died Sept. 3 at the home of her daughter in Hastings. The Rev. Lincoln Justice officiated and burial was made in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
Etta M. Overturf was born July 11, 1869, at Knoxville, Ill., in a small log house built by her father, and departed this life on Sept. 2, 1959, at the age of 90 years, 1 month and 23 days.
Etta came overland from Knoxville to Elk Creek, Nebr., in October 1877 with her parents and one sister and two brothers. She was the eldest of a family of 14 and because of this always carried a heavy share of family responsibility. Etta grew to womanhood in the Elk Creek community. She was married to Chas. Smith., jr. (sic), on March 19, 1889 (sic). Two children were born to this union, Elmer, who preceded her in death in 1914, and a daughter, Fern, at whose home she spent the past several months.
In the spring of 1902, the Smiths moved to Nora, Nebr., where they lived on a farm west of town until they moved to Nora.
Mr. Smith, and the daughter, Mrs. Fern Swanson, are the only survivors in the immediate family. Wilda Swanson, a granddaughter, preceded her in death in 1954. She also leaves three brothers and one sister, Charles of Bird City, Kans., James of Hood River, Ore., Frank of Idaho Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Tamson Jacka of Tecumseh, Nebr.
Etta was converted and joined the "class" at the old Mt. Zion school when she was 14. This later became the Mt. Zion Methodist Church. She lived a long and full life, always faithful to her church. Her illness was long and painful, but she endured it well.
