U.S. Congressman. He moved to Indiana with his parents in 1819, attended the country schools and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was Sheriff of Parke County, (1830-33) and clerk of the Parke County Court, (1833-50). In 1851, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses, serving until 1855. He was again elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress and reelected as an Anti-Lecompton Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving (1857-61). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was in business as a dry-goods merchant until his death at age 55.
