Walter Lee Applewhite, 87, died May 25, 2000 in Winter Springs, FL. Mr. Applewhite was born in Yoakum, TX on September 15, 1912 to Thomas A. "Gus" Applewhite and Mary Etta Russell Applewhite. Walter was a Christian and a life long member of the Baptist Church. He was active during his lifetime in many civic groups. His life exemplified his close relationship with God. He was a hardworking, compassionate and straightforward man. Although his formal education was limited, he advanced throughout his business career. For most of his career, Mr. Applewhite was with Turco, a division of Purex Corporation. He retired in 1977 as Vice President and General Manager of Pacific Airmotive Corporation, a division of Purex. During his career he was instrumental in establishing one of the first production lines for cleaning jet engines at the Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, TX. For the past twenty-two years, Mr. Applewhite has lived in retirement in Winter Springs, FL.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Norred Applewhite; a son, John Thomas Applewhite; his parents, Thomas A. "Gus" Applewhite and Mary Etta Russell Applewhite; brothers, J. L., Macie, and Alfred Applewhite; and sisters, Cheeba and Treva Applewhite.
Funeral services will be held in Corpus Christi, TX, June 2, 2000 at First Baptist Church Chapel with interment to follow at Seaside Memorial Park. Memorials to Walter Applewhite may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, or the charity of your choice. Cage-Mills Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel.
