Son of Joseph Adams Jr. and Rebecca G. Putnam.

On 8 May 1845 his father, Joseph Adams Jr., died at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, of heart complications. Charles was enumerated in the household of his mother in the 1850 and 1860 US Federal Census at Salem, Essex County, MA.

Starting 1 May 1861, Charles served in the 5th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, Company A, ending his service by mustering out on 31 Jul 1861.

On 17 Mar 1862 Charles later mustered into service with the 1st Company Massachusetts Sharpshooters. He was 23 years and 6 months old. On 16 Sep 1862 he ended military service at New York, New York, being discharged for wounds.

On 24 Mar 1867 Charles, 28, married Margaret Ellen Sumner, 21, daughter of Harrison Gray Sumner and Mary Elizabeth Thomas, at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.

Charles was enumerated in the 1890 US Federal census, Veteran's Schedule in Jun 1890 at Salem, MA, noting his service in the 5th Massachusetts Infantry, and adding that he served in the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry with service dates which correspond to those for his time in the 1st Co. Andrews Sharpshooters.
He applied in Massachusetts for a veteran's pension on 2 Jul 1891.

He died on 26 Jun 1893 at Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was 54 years, 9 months and 9 days old. He was buried in Jun 1893 at Salem, MA, with his wife and her family.

On 19 Oct 1893 Margaret received a widow's pension in Massachusetts based on Charles's military service.
