Mrs. Wilma Gallant, age 90 of Kennard, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2007 in the Winfield Healthcare in Crockett. Mrs. Gallant was born July 7, 1916 in Kennard and spent most of her life in this area. Mrs. Gallant was a retired public school teacher who taught for 47 years. Mrs. Gallant was a member of Mt. Olive Church in Kennard.
Mrs. Gallant graduated as valedictorian from Kennard High School in 1934. Mrs. Gallant attended Mary Hardin Baylor for one year and obtained her teaching certificate. Mrs. Gallant began teaching in 1936 at Pine Prairie near Kennard. Mrs. Gallant taught during the school years and attended Sam Houston State Teacher's College in the summer semesters until she completed her baccalaureate degree in 1940.
After she and husband Rayford moved to Buda, Texas, she obtained a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Texas in 1953. Two of her proudest moments in the latter stage of her life were to see her granddaughter, Sonya Gallant Stevenson graduate from Stephen F. Austin State University in May 2005, and to know that her grandson, Daniel Logan Gallant, graduated from Texas A&M University on May 13, 2007.
Mrs. Gallant taught second grade most of her teaching career. Mrs. Gallant taught at Pine Prairie, Kennard, Buda, Glover and Crockett public schools.
Mrs. Gallant loved her family with all of her heart. Mrs. Gallant was the most wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Gallant was a tremendous example of devotion and dedication, and will always be a source of inspiration and strength to her family. Mrs. Gallant also delighted in the fact that she had positively touched and shaped young people's lives during her teaching career.
Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Rayford Gallant, of Kennard; sons Danny Gallant and wife Ethel, and Billy Gallant, all of Kennard; grandchildren Sonya Gallant Stevenson and husband Shane Stevenson, Logan Gallant and Ashley Gallant, all of Kennard; great-granddaughter Haley Nicole Morgan; numerous other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents Bill and Sallie Baker; and brother Robert Baker.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Wilma Gallant were held Sunday, May 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Mt. Olive Church in Kennard with the Rev. Larry Bruce officiating. Interment followed in the Corinth Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Olive Church in Kennard.
