Community Leader and Funeral Director. James R. "Jay" Tankersley III, 49, of Dayton, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2000, at the Liberty-Dayton Hospital in Liberty. He was a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, and a previous resident of Houston.

He is survived by his wife, Better C. Tankersley of Dayton; sons Jared Tankersley and Justin Tankersley, both of Dayton, and his brother John Tankersley of Houston.

Jay moved to Dayton in the early 1970s when starting to work at Sterling Funeral Home where he remained for 28 loyal years of service to his community. Jay possessed a natural ability for his profession, which enabled him to show his compassion for all. He attended his middle and high school years in Houston. After high school, he made his commitment to his profession by attending a local college, graduating and working a short time before coming to Dayton. He met his wife Betty in 1974 and they married the following year. Making Dayton their home, Jay and Betty have reared tow sons and have made considerable differences in their community. Of all of the accomplishments that Jay had achieved, one outstanding event in 1997 seemed to top them all. It was that year that Jay was elected the Citizen of the Year by the Liberty-Dayton Chamber of Commerce.

Jay was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Dayton serving as a member of the Administrative Board and Board of Trustees, Dayton Community Development Corporation, Team City Dayton - Chairman, Teen City Dayton - Advisor, Rotary Club of Texas, Director of the Dayton / Liberty Chamber of Commerce, former member of the Liberty County Metro Go-Texan Committee, Past President of Dayton Ole Time Days, Past Chairman Liberty / Dayton Chamber of Commerce Country Christmas, spokesman for the Museum of Natural Science - Egytian Exhibit, National Funeral Directors Association, Magnolia Park Cemetery Association, Anahuac GatorFest, Memorial Day Services at Palms Memorial Park Cemetery, Daniel City Park Board, Lee College Extension Committee, and the Boy Scouts of America. To each and every project that he joined, he gave his devotion, his caring and his interest. Jay's involvement in the Liberty and Dayton community is legendary and has been for many years. A loving and kind husband and father, he has proven his mettle professionally by becoming a trained consultant when death or tragedy requires the gentleness and understanding of a bereavement counselor to help others with death.
