William emigrated with his mother Ann and stepfather Samuel Black and younger brothers Joseph and John aboard the Escort in 1859.

After Samuel Black's death, Ann married widower Charles Miles of Gawler. William's death notice confirms this relationship:

"STOW.—On the 30th July, at Hindmarsh, of inflammation of the lungs, William, beloved husband of Louisa Caroline Stow, and eldest son of Mrs. C. Miles, Gawler, aged 32."

William's wife Louisa Caroline Gill (nee Miles) was Charles' daughter to his first wife, Louisa Doe (nee Hughes). Louisa Caroline married widower John Henry Gill after William's passing.
