NAUGATUCK – Mario “Mayo” Abate, 95, husband of the late Lillian (Urashka) Abate, died peacefully on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018, at Glendale Center.
Mayo was born on Aug. 5, 1923, in Ansonia, son of the late Vincent and Anna (Guarcello) Abate and lived in Naugatuck since 1943. He was the former owner of Mayo’s Restaurant and Mayo’s Fireside Cafe in Middlebury for 33 years, and he also worked in the footwear division at Uniroyal for 21 years, during which time he served as vice-president of Local 45, U.R.W. Mayo was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd and 4th Degree, the Waterbury Club and the Exchange Club of Waterbury. He enjoyed golfing and working out at the Naugatuck YMCA.

He is survived by his sons, Gregory Abate and wife Karen of Las Vegas, Nev. and Ronald Abate and wife Denise of Naugatuck; his five grandchildren, Jason Abate and wife Paula, Ryan Abate and wife Sarah, Kelli Lyons and husband Joe, Kris Abate and wife Carla, and Jessica Abate; many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mayo was predeceased by his three brothers and two sisters. He was the heart and soul of our family and will be greatly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Burial will follow in Saint James Cemetery.
Calling hours are Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.
