McCarthy and Abigail Quigley were married on June 5, 1945, in St Paul, Minnesota. They first lived in Watkins, Minnesota, at an agricultural commune formed by Catholic couples. During Gene's years in politics, they had a home in St. Paul and Washington, D.C. After they separated in 1968, Eugene lived in Woodville, Virginia, and had an apartment in Washington, D.C. Abigail lived in an apartment on Connecticut Avenue in the District of Columbia. They never divorced. They had three daughters and one son from their marriage. Abigail graduated Phi Beta Kappa from St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1936. The Abigail McCarthy Women's Research Scholarship Center was established at St Catherine's College in her honor. She received a Masters's Degree from the University of Minnesota in 1942 and did postgraduate work at the University of Chicago and the Middlebury School of English. Abigail was a well-known Catholic author, educator, and advocate for women. She wrote several books(Private Faces/Public Places 1972) and was a regular writer for "Commonweal" magazine from 1974-1999. She also wrote for the Washington Post and the New York Times. She was the founder and president of Church Women.
