Obituary
Michael Allen Bowe passed away peacefully at 1:00am on October 31st 2017, surrounded by his wife Debra Bowe (Portland) and 3 children Christopher Bowe (Portland), Christie Ward (Vancouver) and Sherrie Hernandez (Vancouver). He was laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery on November 9th, 2017. Michael is survived by his 3 siblings Marie Fisher (TX), Gary Bowe (WA) and Jim Bowe (PA), his 3 children (listed above), his step-son Jason Willett (Myrtle Creek) along with 11 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Marie Bowe from Santa Cruz, CA. Michael was 66 years old.

Michael was born in Santa Cruz CA on October 2nd 1951. He married his first wife, Paulette Wittwer in 1972 while living in Santa Cruz. After divorcing, he re-married Debra Bowe in 1987 while living in Bend OR and just last month, the two celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. Both Debra and Paulette have remained close friends over time and although considered “unusual” or “not-normal” by today’s standards, a close relationship between Mike, Debra and Paulette along with the 3 kids has made for a very loving and supportive relationship for all involved… all the way up until Mike’s passing.

During his life, Mike held many interesting jobs including roller skating rink operator/owner, electrician, radio disc jockey, satellite installer, restaurant owner, tow truck/semi-truck driver and cattle farmer. Most recently, Mike was the plant manager at a local distribution warehouse in Portland OR. Mike lived in numerous locations throughout his life as well, including Santa Cruz CA, San Jose CA, Eugene OR, Bend OR, Lancaster PA and Portland OR. Most recently, Mike and Deb bought a floating home in the Hayden Island area of Portland, realizing a dream for both of them… to live on the water. Nothing made Mike happier than seeing his family and friends visit their floating home to enjoy the water… swimming, boating, kayaking, and playing in the mighty Columbia river. Mike was an avid sports fan as well, watching everything from baseball to football… from NASCAR to soccer. And to those who had a chance to meet Mike in person, his love for the Oregon Ducks football team was obvious and unmatched. This love, in fact, was so strong that Mike was laid to rest with his two favorite Oregon Ducks blankets by his side. Surely, a fitting comfort.

Michael passed away from complications associated with brain cancer. He was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in December 2015 and over the last 24 months received surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy treatments to assist in fighting the cancer. Due to the location of the tumor, Mike’s motor function was greatly impacted preventing him from using his right side. Although physical therapy and medication had some positive impact during these treatments, side-effects from the cancer proved to be too much to overcome and as a result, Michael was confined to a bed and wheelchair during the last 12-14 months. Despite numerous hospital stays and a stint in an assisted living facility Mike was finally able to be moved home to the place where he was happiest…. the Columbia River. Michael Bowe will be sorely missed by all that knew him. He was a fun-loving spirit where bad jokes, grandiose stories and constant laughter were a normal part of his day. More than anything, he loved making people laugh and that laughter played a major role in making a devastatingly horrible situation, at times, palatable.

Brain cancer is an evil disease and one the entire Bowe family has seen up close. We encourage any who are able to make a financial contribution to brain cancer research with the hope of assisting in the advancement of treatment options for those affected. The family would like to thank everyone for the support and kind words during this difficult time. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a future date & time for those who would like to celebrate the life Michael Bowe. For any questions or additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact the family directly. Rest in Peace, dad and husband.
