Rev. C. E. Marshall Rites Held Monday
Citizens of the community were deeply saddened Saturday to learn of the death of the Rev. Charles E. Marshall, retired Methodist minister who had been making his home her for the past sixteen years.
Mr. Marshall passed away in the Eagle Lake Community Hospital Saturday evening, Jan. 8th following a lengthy illness.
He spent a total of thirty-nine years in the ministry of the Methodist Church and was well known throughout the Southwest Conference of Texas. The family moved here upon his retirement sixteen years ago to be near the family of their daughter, Mrs. J. R. Thomas.
During the time he was active in the ministry he served at many churches in South Texas and was District Superintendent of the McAllen District of the Methodist Church for six years.
Mr. Marshall was a graduate of Southwestern University in Georgetown and was ordained into the ministry after studies at Southern Methodist University. His first church was at Kenedy in 1916.
Not only was he a prominent minister, but he was active in many other organizations. He served on the Board of Trustees at Southwestern University in Georgetown for a number of years and also served on the staff of the U.S.O.
He was active during his lifetime in the Masonic Lodge, the rotary CFlub, the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce; was chairman of the Ministerial Alliance for several years and a Scoutmaster for fourteen years.
He dedicated his life to his family, his church, and to his friends and especially to the youth of the communities in which he served. His service to God and his fellow man shall be praised forever.
Funeral services were held from the chapel of the Mill-Bauer Funeral Home in Eagle Lake at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 10th. Officiating at the services were the Rev. Bishop Eugene Slater of San Antonio, Bishop of the Southwest Conference of Texas; the Rev. W. M. Harris, District Superintendent, Austin; and the Rev. Windel Bell, paster of Colly Memorial United Methodist Church in Eagle Lake.
Mrs. C. H. Matthews rendered favorite hymns at the organ and accompanied Mrs. Windel Bell, soloist.
He was placed to final rest in the Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake. Serving as pallbearers were Dr. Raymond Thomas, Eugene Baker, Victor Scott, Robert P. Wilcox, Mike Cheatham, and Steve Balas.
Charles Edward Marshall was born December 17, 1892 in Travis County, Texas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Marshall. He and Miss Eva Laura Dickinson were united in marriage Oct. 25, 1916 in Kenedy, Texas.
One son, Charles E. Marshall, Jr., was killed in action with the U.S. Air Force in the East Indies on Nov. 14, 1944.
Survivors include Mrs. C. E. Marshall of this city, three daughters, Mrs. Juanita Kellam of Corpus Christi, Mrs. Evelyn Thomas of Eagle Lake, and Mrs. Bernice Jackson of Norcross, Georgia; also six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and seven brothers, the Rev. R. S. Marshall of Palestine, the Rev. W. H. Marshall of Utopia, E. G. Marshall and L. H. Marshall of Corpus Christi, H. M. Marshall of Hico, Wesley Marshall of Kingsville, Warren Marshall of Amarillo; also two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Lou Bailey of San Antonio and Mrs. Ida Ryan of Runge. Four sisters and brothers and his parents preceded him in death.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the family in the loss of this loved one.
