Mary D. Spellman

Mary Dwyer Spellman, aged 86, passed away surrounded by family on June 18, 2018, in her home at Sunrise Assisted Living in Burlingame, CA. She was a beautiful, accomplished, and gracious person who is greatly missed by all who knew her.
Mary was born in Burlingame on New Year's Eve, 1931 to Sibyl and Frank Dwyer. She was baptized at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, attended Mercy High School, and was a drama student at Holy Names University in Oakland. Mary served as class president and met her future husband, Walt Spellman (deceased), who was class president of St. Mary's in Oakland. They married on October 9, 1954 at St. Catherine of Siena.They moved to Denver, then Seattle where Walt was stationed during the Korean War and where he started his career at Kraft Foods. He was soon promoted and transferred to their HQ in Chicago, where they both learned to live with snow and ice. Mary grew up driving a stick shift on the steep hills of San Francisco, so this was no problem.Mary was a redheaded Irish-American lass with family ties to Ireland. St. Patrick's Day was one of her favorite holidays, and she was known to dance the Irish jig if persuaded. She enjoyed acting in amateur productions, playing bridge, and reading in her free time. She was a savvy investor who, if times were different, would have been a stockbroker like her father who served as President of the San Francisco Stock Exchange.
Mary and Walt had five children ... They moved to Santa Rosa after retirement where Mary enjoyed cruises, trying new restaurants in the wine country, and spending time with family and friends. Mary moved back to her hometown of Burlingame in 2015, where she served as President of the Resident Council at Sunrise.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marjorie, her husband Walt, and son Mike. She is remembered by her surviving children, sister-in-law Lynn (Bryan) West and children, and her wonderful extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on July 13th at St. Catherine of Siena in Burlingame. The Spellman family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at Sunrise of Burlingame and Mission Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary's name to Mission Hospice or St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.
