HER BROTHER BECKONED. AND THREE - YEAR - OLD EDE AB BATE 8TARTEO TO OBEY, But Death in the Shape of the Cruel Hoof of a Runaway Horse Inter posed and Crushed her Young Life Out in the Presence of Agonizsd and Powerless Spectators. The danger of allowing children of tender years to play upon the streets, and the necessity of Droviding public playgrounds in different sections of the city, has been illustrated several times within the last year, but never more forcibly than yesterday afternoon, when three - year - old JSde Abbate, who was playing at the corner of Pittston avenue and Willow street, was struck down and instantly killed by a runaway horse. The child was playing near her pa rent s residence in company with her brother Stephen, aged 10, and her sister Nellie, aged 5 years, when a runaway horse, owned by Fred Mnrscb, dashed up the street at a rapid rate of speed, tier brother and sister saw tbe danger, as did also seveial pedestrians, but they were powerless, and tbe escape of the other two children is considered miraculous. Tbe children did not notice tbe ap proacb of the uncontrollable steed until it was almost upon them. They fled and just in time, but before doing so the brother beckoned and called for his little sister to follow. She was in the centre of tbe road almost directly in front of the horse. The boy was some distance away and could not save his sister if he had self - possession enough to have made the attempt. Little Ede looked up from her play at her brother s call and with a smile on ner childish face started towards him. Before she had taken many steps ttie infuriated animal was upon her and with one blow of its cruel hoof, her life was crushed out. The inanimate body presented a pitiable sight The little head was literally crushed to a pulp by the blow, and when tbe agonized mother gazed upon the remains of her child her grief was heartrending. She tore her hair aud went into hysterics and it required strenuous efforts" to prevent her from injuring hor - self. The parents are Mr. and Mrs. Gas - nere Abbate. They are natives of Italy and reside on Pittston avenue a few doors from where the shocking accident occurred. Mr. Mursch is greatly disturbed because of tbe accident. He had alighted from the carriage near where the children were playing for the purpose of fixing the harness. As he did so the horse sprung forward and dashed toward the children at a terrific rate of speed. The animal was stopped by the wagon collid ing with a fence.

Kicked to Death
Runaway Horse Leaves Death and Destruction Behind
Exciting Scene On An Avenue
Fred Murch’s Horse Runaway, Takes to the Sidewalk, and Kicks to Death Little Lottie Abbotti – Coroner Lillie, the interesting little three-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Abboti of 813 Pittston avenue, South Side, was instantly killed about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon by a runaway horse, at the corner of Pittston avenue and Birch street.

The frantic animal was attached to a light spring wagon and owned by Fred Murch, the Pittston avenue boiler maker. Murch was on his way home from the central city when the unfortunate accident occurred. He drove up Willow street and was rounding the corner at Pittston avenue when the check strap became unfastened. He alighted from the wagon to adjust it and as he did so the horse which is a spirited one, took fright and dashed down Pittston avenue at breakneck speed. Nearing the corner of Pittston ave. and Birch street, the horse took to the sidewalk. Little Lillie Abboti was standing there at the time and the frightened steed pounced down upon her striking her on the head with one of its hoofs fracturing her skull. Death must have been instantaneous. Her sister who is a year older and standing near by at the time, had a very narrow escape. William Wirth who was standing on the opposite corner made a gallant effort to save the unfortunate Lillie, but was unsuccessful. When the lifeless body of the little child was taken to the home of the parents the latter were prostrated. Mrs. Abotti swooned away and for a time her condition was critical. Coroner Kelly will probably investigate the case today. (The Times-Tribune, Scranton, PA, April 19, 1894)
