A memorial service for Dr. Nancy Elaine Shelby Sanders, 77, of Emory will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 1, at Emory Baptist Church officiated by Bro. Joe Perkins and Bro. Robert Burns. A service will be held later that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams Rd. in Dallas, officiated by Dr. George Mason.
Dr. Sanders and husband Neal were longtime members of Wilshire Baptist before becoming members of Emory Baptist Church. Her remains will be placed in The Columbarium at Wilshire Baptist.
She died on November 25, 2011, in Dallas after a brief illness. She was bom in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Dewitt and Addie Mae Evans Shelby on April 11, 1934.
Dr. Sanders graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1956, a Master of Science Degree from Texas Women’s University in 1972 and a PhD from Texas Women’s University in 1982. She worked for the Dallas ISD as a teacher and curriculum writer from 1967 to 1978. After graduating with a PhD, she began a second career as an accomplished Marriage and Family therapist in private practice, where she helped many individuals, marriages and families. She was a member of the Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, who honored her with the Distinguished Service Award in 1991 She and husband Neal, as a marriage enrich- ment couple, were presenters for the ACME Association. The couple moved to Emory in 2003 where they established and operated the Highland Lake Lodge. Dr. Sanders was co-founder and the first president of the Rains County Republican Women. She held membership in several Model A Clubs, quilting groups, Friends of the Rains County Public Library, Lake Country Neighbors, the Rains County bridge group, and was a youth counselor at church camps. She wrote articles for national magazines, and wrote and edited a book for the Dallas Model A Club.
Survivors include her loving husband of 21 years, Neal Sanders; three sons, Brian Badgwell and wife Susan and Steve Badgwell and wife Bonnie, both of Arlington, and Tom Badgwell and wife Donna of Houston; daughter, Gaye Badgwell of Dallas; brother, Bertram Shelby of Omaha, Nebraska; step-children, Lonnie Sanders and wife\ Ginny of Plano, Laurie Diffee and husband Mike and Sherry Hicks and husband Pat, both of Dallas; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Martha Sue Hart.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending a memorial gift in her name to the Emory Baptist Church Library, the Wilshire Baptist Church Library or the Rains County Public Library.
