Early in the United States Adolf worked on the railways, and then as a shoemaker. When his wife's sister (=Christina Romer Nielson)'s brother-in-law died in 1902, Adolf with shoemaking experience took over the Nielson shoe store on the Watson block of Jamestown, ND. He did the transatlantic voyage to Copenhagen at age 60 (presumably to visit family).
