He immigrated in 1872 and was naturalized in 1878 in Monmouth County, IL. This is also where his wife's brother Jacob David Romer was located at the time. Early in the United States Adolf worked on the railways, and then as a shoemaker. When his wife's sister (=Christina Romer Nielson)'s brother-in-law died in 1902, Adolf with shoemaking experience took over the Nielson shoe store on the Watson block of Jamestown, ND. He did the transatlantic voyage to Copenhagen at age 60 (presumably to visit family).
He married 10 Nov 1871 at Sankt Paul's Church in Kirke, Kobenhavn, Kobenhavn, Denmark. Their seven children are listed in her obituary on FindAGrave Memorial 146716356
