Raymond John Bauer

Raymond John Bauer, 92, of Southport, formerly from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Carillon Assisted Living in Southport.
Mr. Bauer was born October 22, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, son of the late Raymond F. and Helen Schamberger Bauer. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp where he served in WWII and was also a member of Knights of Columbus.
After high school, Mr. Bauer graduated from Slippery Rock University, University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. He coached baseball, basketball, soccer, and football for over 30 years at South Park High School and Bethel Park High School, both in Pittsburgh where he affectionately became known as "Coach." He also taught PE and Social Studies. He became Athletic Director at both the high school and college level. In an era where girls' sports were not common, Coach instituted girls track, swimming, volleyball, and basketball programs. He not only achieved this in high school sports, but at Laroche College as well. Coach served as President of Pennsylvania Athletic Directors Association, enjoyed golfing and woodworking. As a coach, he loved to follow the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and UNC Basketball.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Rita and sister Marian Barnes. Leaving to cherish his memory are his children, Bruce Bauer and wife Arlene of Southport and Jim Bauer and wife Sonya of Pennsylvania; sister, Helen Baltz of Covington, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Kelli DeNiro, Melissa Wilgis, and Christopher Bauer; five great grandchildren, Jonathan DeNiro, Paige DeNiro, Matthew Bauer, Abigail Bauer, and Frances Jane Wilgis.
