Marvin Andrew Andersen was born August 11, 1924 to Andrew and Minnie (Wendt) Andersen near Winside.
He lived in Winside and Hoskins his entire life. He attended District 28 South Country School, southeast of Winside. Marvin also known as “Uncle Marv,” was inducted into the U.S. Army on March 14, 1945. He left from San Francisco on a huge military ship going by the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. There were 2500 service men on that ship, travelling the Pacific Ocean to the Philippines. Marvin celebrated his 21st birthday on this ship. His rank was Tech 4, and was in charge of the motor pool on the island, getting to see General Douglas Macarthur, when working with the General’s car and jeep on the island. Decorations: Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Independence Ribbon. Marvin was honorably discharged on December 8, 1946, with foreign service of 1 year, 1 month and 20 days. Marvin was a member of the American Legion, in Winside, the Roy Reed Post 252, for 72 years.
Marvin married Wilma Jensen at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winside May 22, 1948. They farmed southeast of Winside. To this union was born James Dean, Betty Jo, and Steven Chris. In November 1953, Marvin and daughter, Betty Jo survived a car accident, that Wilma and the two boys did not.
Marvin married Betty Ann Voss Allvin April 5, 1959, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Winside. They farmed on the home place southeast of Winside. To this union Kevin, Gary, and Linda were born. He farmed, and learned how to butcher from Chris Jensen, and was a butcher for the lockers in Laurel, Wayne, and Winside. Marvin was part of the start up crew at Goodyear, in Norfolk, in 1979, retiring from there in 1991.
Marvin and Betty Ann moved to Hoskins in 1980. Travels for Marvin, included driving to Oregon, Wisconsin, and Indiana to visit family. In May 2010, Marvin with Betty, Kevin, and Mary, went to Washington, DC to see Arlington National Cemetery, and the World War II Memorial. He was very surprised and appreciative when a young man came over to him there and thanked him for his service.
Hobbies and interests of Marvin were tinkering and welding in the garage, reading the newspapers, watching westerns and solving gameshows on tv, playing cards and most often winning in cards, pitch, shuffleboard, motorcycles, gardening, last garden was 2017, fishing and his red pickup.
Marvin is survived by wife of 59 years, Betty Ann; daughter, Betty Jo Deck of Crawfordsville, IN, son, Howard (Becky) Allvin of Kearney, son, Kevin (Mary) of Norfolk, son Gary (Carla) of Hadar and daughter, Linda Andersen and fiance’ Dave Kohl of Hoskins; grandchildren: Pat Deck, Steve Deck, Alicia Allvin Heather Allvin-Wick, Andrew Allvin, Karen Andersen and Jennifer Andersen-Hudt; great-granddaughters, Brettney Deck-Asllani and Paisley Wick; great, great granddaughter, Amelia Rose Asllani; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Jo Andersen of Fort Calhoun, and Beverly Voss of Winside; brother-in-law, Ronald(Cheryl) Jensen of Davis, CA; several nieces; nephews; and good neighbors.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Wilma; 4 year old son, Jimmy and 5 month old son, Steven; 10 year old grandson, Christopher Andersen; brothers, Leonard Andersen and Howard Andersen (Karlyne Andersen and Jean Andersen); sister, Dorothea (Dewey) Jensen; twin brothers in infancy; brothers-in-law, George Voss, Leo (LaVila) Voss, Howard (Billie) Voss; sisters-in-law, Loretta Voss, Lorraine (Wayne) Denklau, and Margaret (Don) Kay; nephews, Tim Voss and Rick Kay.
He passed away Saturday at Providence Medical Center in Wayne.
