Civil War: Company E, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers

Richard A. Graham was enrolled by Second Lieutenant William W. Frazier at Caspar Creek, Mendocino County, California, August 3 and mustered in as Private, Company E, First Battalion of Mountaineers (Infantry), California Volunteers, which was raised during the year 1863 for service against Indians in Humboldt County and in the northwestern portions of California, August 14, 1863. At his muster in Private Graham stated that his nativity was Pennsylvania and he was age 24 years. From March 27 and during April 1864 he was on Detached Service scouting for Indians. From July 19 and to during September 1864 he was on Detached Service scouting for Indians. During October 1864 he was on Daily Duty as Acting Hospital Steward. During November 1864 he was on Detached Service with pack train. From December 1864 to May 1865 he was on Extra Duty as Acting Hospital Steward. Private Graham mustered-out at Fort Humboldt, Humboldt County, California, June 14, 1865.

He filed for a Civil War veterans pension in California October 17, 1890, and received certificate No. 686,560.

Richard A. Graham was admitted to the Veterans Home of California at Yountville, Napa County, California, October 22, 1901. At admission Richard A. Graham stated that he was born in 1840.

Richard A. Graham, age 78 years and a widower, was enumerated January 19, 1920, at Yountville, Napa County, California.

He died at San Francisco while on leave from the Yountville veterans home and was buried in San Francisco National Cemetery.
