Emerson E. Usleton was born on 12 July 1866 in Coffee County, Tennessee to Perry Green Uselton and Lucy (Keele) Johnson Uselton. Notes: The family surname appears in a large variety of spellings. The surname on both headstones for Emerson show the spelling as "Usleton". The death certificate for him shows the spelling as "Usselton". His father used the spelling as "Uselton".

Emerson's father (Perry) was married prior to the marriage to his mother (Lucy). The name of that woman is currently unknown. Emerson had two half-siblings (from his father Perry and the first wife): John William Uselton, and Louisa Jane Uselton.

Emerson's mother (Lucy) was also married prior to the marriage with his father (Perry). She was married to a "Johnson". Emerson had two half-siblings (from his mother Lucy and her first husband): Andrew Johnson, and Sarah E Johnson.
