John Placido Abad
December 26, 1934 - October 11, 2017

John "Johnny" was born December 26, 1934 in San Felipe, a province of Zambales, Philippines. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Juan, John enlisted in the United States Navy on May 11, 1962. His naval career brought him to the west coast of San Diego, CA to the east coast of Norfolk, VA. Other destinations included tours across the Mediterranean Sea to the shores off Gaeta, Italy. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years completing his final tour on NAS Pensacola, Fl. He later spent 13 years with Federal Civil Service in the Naval Education and Training Program Management Support Activity (NETPMSA), before finally retiring the second time on September 30, 1996.
His decades of service on the ocean sparked his passion for the sea and led him to his favorite past time: fishing. He was never ashamed to admit that he and boats didn't mix, which is why you could only find him fishing safely from the shore. He enjoyed fishing for bluefish on the Fort Pickens fishing pier and for white trout on 3-Mile bridge. But his favorite quarry was chasing pompano off the shores of Johnson's Beach. There he would meet his fishing "classmates", as he would always call them, sharing strategies and stories of the proverbial "big one that got away." And what better way to enjoy his catch than with a healthy mix of homegrown vegetables which he carefully chose to pair with the fish he caught. He was very proud of the hard work he put into his garden.
Johnny is predeceased by his wife Erlinda "Erling"; his parents, Enrique and Zuella Abad; and 9 siblings.
He is survived by his two sisters, Brigida Abad Perlas and Maria "Maring" Abad Francia; and his three children, Cathy (Randy), Rick (Christine) and John (Kim); and his five grandchildren, Alyssa, Lauren, Andrew, Bethany and Sydney.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home, 100 Beverly Parkway. For those who wish to pray the Rosary, it will begin at 4:30 p.m.
A funeral mass will be held Monday, October 23, 2017 at 10:15 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church in Pensacola with Reverend Eugene Casserly
His remains will be committed to Barrancas National Cemetery during a ceremony with military honors at 12:00 p.m. Monday, October 23, 2017.
