Mary Ann (Wilson) Binford, 55, passed away on Saturday, 3 March 1984. She was born on 11 Mar 1929 in Kitzmillerville, Garrett, Maryland to Robert Lee and Caroline Elizabeth (Walker) Wilson.

Mary Ann married (1) William Coombs Howell in 1951 and (2) Lewis Roberts Binford in 1970. The following obituary appeared in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday, 6 March 1984 on p. C-11:

MARY ANN BINFORD, CHILD EDUCATOR, DIES

Mary Ann Binford, 55, who was a leader in early childhood education in New Mexico died Saturday.

She was the early childhood education specialist for the Albuquerque Public Schools.

"She was the guiding light for the APS kindergarten program," said her close friend Lenore Wolfe.

Ms. Wolfe is a well-known authority on early childhood education in New Mexico.

Mrs. Binford collapsed on Saturday while attending the annual conference of the New Mexico Association for the Education of Young Children. She was scheduled to receive the Outstanding Early Childhood Educator of the Year Award from the association later in the day.

Accepting the award on her behalf was Hugh Prather, director of elementary education for APS.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at French Mortuary, 1111 University NE.

Persons attending the service are invited to write something about Mrs. Binford and either read it aloud, or give the written version to Mrs. Binford's Family, Ms. Wilfe said.

An Albuquerque resident for 31 years, Mrs. Binford taught at Manzano Day School for 13 years.

In the 1960s, she helped establish the Manzanita Center kindergarten at the University of New Mexico.

In 1969, she started working for APS, and was coordinator for the establishment of Model Cities kindergartens for the district.

She did her undergraduate work at Antioch College and her graduate work at UNM. She grew up in Maryland.

Mrs. Binford is survived by her husband, Dr. Lewis Binford, professor of anthropology at UNM; two sons...[private] and Joe Howell, both of Albuquerque; her mother, Caroline Wilson of Corrales; and a brother, Robert Wilson of Detroit.
