It is believed that Nicholas Heayn of Cornwall was later known as William Thomas Heayn of Philadelphia. He is listed as William T. Heayn in his obituary. The surname is also spelled variously.

The reasons for the use of a different forename after emigration are not clear. However, documents from Cornwall and Pennsylvania strongly indicate both that William/Nicholas is the father of the same children on both sides of the Atlantic, and that these children are siblings.

Thus the paternity of the children is well proven through standard genealogical research. The identity of Mr. Heayn in Philadelphia is somewhat harder to establish.

1904: Death certificate, FamilySearch.org, LDS film 1004017, image 248. Birthplace of William and his parents is shown as Pennsylvania (not England). His age is listed as 81 years (not 80). The location of the funeral, and also the cemetery, match the death notice in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

1904: Death notice, Philadelphia Inquirer, Feb 25, 1904, page 7.

1900: U.S. census, listed as father-in-law of Thomas B Rodgers on Schiller Street in Philadelphia. "Heayn, Thomas" is shown as a widower born in England in May 1823, who emigrated in 1869 and was an alien ("Al").

1851: England census. Pydar Street, "Nicholas Heayn," Mariner Master, born St. Mary, Cornwall. Wife Elizabeth (25), children Elizabeth (5), Susan (3). Possibly Susan is Lucy Ann, otherwise this could indicate an error in analysis.

1851: UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927, via Ancestry
