Robert was the son of Carolyn Louise "Carrie" Blauvelt (1889-1966) and Frederick Brunel Lewis (1885-1938). In 1941, he married Jean Learmont Clark of Port Glasgow, Scotland, and together they had four daughters, including Barbara Graham Lewis Hoffman (1943-1992). He was a mechanical engineer, earning his degree from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and working his entire career for Wright (later Curtis-Wright) Aviation.
