James was a member of the class of Hampden-Sydney College, VA in 1824. In 1825, he was graduated from the U of NC with an A.B. Degree. He was enrolled at Harvard Law School 1825-26; he then attended the U of VA 1827-28.
He was elected the the VA Legislature abt 1821; he apparently voted to continue slavery, but later regretted this vote.
