GEORGE KERN, 70, FORMER PRESSMEN'S UNION HEAD, DIES
Succumbs to Illness of Complications in St. Louis Hospital; Funeral to Be Sunday
********************************
George Kern, 70 years old, a former president of the Belleville Pressman's Union and the oldest active member of that local died at 12:30 o'clock this morning in Alexian Brothers Hospital, St. Louis. He was a resident of 3421 West Main Street and had been a patient in the St. Louis hospital for a little more than three weeks.

Mr. Kern had been in ill health for several years suffering from hardening of the arteries but his condition did not become critical until several months ago when complications developed.

He was born on a farm south of Millstadt, April 4, 1863, a son of the late Henry and Kate Kern, nee Dewald. He was married to Louisa Flebich, September 24, 1882. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their West Main Street home last year.

As a young man, Mr. Kern moved to Belleville where he learned the craft of newspaper and job pressman. During the '90s, he entered the employ of the News-Democrat, a connection that was maintained until 1921, with the exception of two years, 1916 to 1918 which were spent as an attendant at the Alton State Hospital, during the administration of former Governor Edward F. Dunne. He was a lifelong Democrat.

Besides his wife, Mr. Kern leaves one daughter and six sons as follows: Alma, wife of Albert Gerlach of St. Louis; Arthur Kern of Mason City, Ill.; Raymond Kern of St. Louis; Alvin Kern, 13 West G Street; George Kern Jr., living at home, 3421 West Main Street; Milton Kern, 809 Centreville Avenue and Edwin Kern, North 39th Street. Twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

He also leaves one brother, Louis Kern, R.R. No. 1, Du Quoin; one sister, Mrs. Katie Loeb, St. Louis and one half-brother, Charles Kern, Whitehall, Mich. Another half-brother, owner of the News-Democrat, passed away in November 1931.

The deceased was a member of the Mystic Workers and was a charter member of the local Pressman's Union.

His funeral will be held Sunday afternoon. Services at 1:30 o'clock will be held in the Pete Gaerdner Funeral Home, 258 Lebanon Avenue and will be conducted by the Rev. Otto Pessel, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Church. Burial will be made in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
