Alvin Lawrence Marshal, born December 3, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. Passed away on February 22, 2017 in Houston, TX. Growing up in New York, he would spend his summers working in the Catskills and playing basketball with some of the greatest, George Mikan, Bob Cousey and Dolph Shayes. He was dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America first as a child and later as a leader for his sons troops, where he was presented with a Silver Beaver Award as well as several Shofar Awards for outstanding Jewish leaders. When he wasn’t behind the plate at the little league Baseball Fields as an umpire, you could find him either in the dugout coaching or in the board room of the little league as Vice President. “Uncle Al” is how he was known around the B’nai B’nai B’rith Youth Organization as an advisor to AZA. His dedication to serving continued as he served on the Education Committee, PTO President, Men’s Club President and performer in the yearly shows and plays at Adath Emeth Synogogue (currently UOS).

One of his greatest passions was the Optimist Club, where he became an active, contributing and renowned member of Optimist International, serving as the clubs President six times, winning Optimist of the Year multiple times and serving as District Convention Chairman for twenty-years. He attended fifteen International conventions where he loved meeting people from all over by collecting convention pins from all over the country.

Although he served many organizations and influenced many individuals, his greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife, Rita Robinson Marshal; his beloved children, Joe (and Janet), Judy Karonika and Matt (and Mary Ellen); cherished grandchildren, Ben (and Colleen) Marshal, Aaron Marshal and Adam (and Belinda) & Jack Karonika and great granddaughter Libby Marshal, Sister in law Iris Marshall, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Bessie and Max Mofshovitz, Sister Norma Haas, Brother Stan Marshal, Mother in law & Father in law Rose and Ben Robinson, Brother in law Jerry Robinson, Brother in law Phil Haas and son in law Tom Karonika.

Donations can be made to Congregation Or AMI or Optimist International Foundation, which were both important to Alvin.
