He practiced law from 1949-1968, becoming a partner in the firm now known as Davenport, Files, and Kelly. In 1968, he was appointed as Judge of the Fourth Judicial District, Division C, Ouachita and Morehouse Parishes. He served on the bench until his retirement in 1988.
He was a member of the American Bar Association, American Judiciary Society, Louisiana State Bar Association (House of Delegates 1960-1961, Board of Governors, 1964-1966), Fourth Judicial District Bar Association (Secretary-Treasurer, 1949-1958; Executive Committee, 1956-1968); National and Louisiana Association of Juvenile Judges. He served as Chairman of the Judiciary Commission of Louisiana in 1982-1983. He was also a member of the American Legion, Downtown Monroe Lions Club, and was at one time active in Little League and American Legion baseball. He was on the Infrastructure Committee of Monroe, and received the Rotary Club Paul Harris award. He served as Sunday School teacher, Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and as Chairman of the Finance Board of his church, Memorial United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, R. Dean Farr and Birdie Harmon Farr; two sisters, Mary Louise Farr and Elizabeth Ann Farr; a sister-in-law, Sally Hodge Farr; and a great-nephew, Christopher Price.
He was survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Taylor Farr; three sons, James Farr, Doug Farr and wife Kristy, Paul Farr and wife Ann; one brother, R. D. Farr, Jr., all of Monroe; one sister-in-law, Mary Belle Holstead of Ruston; 1 grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.
