Jefferson Winston Williams Military Biography;

Jefferson was born 1828 in Lawrence County,MS
He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Lexington, Mississippi April 10, 1862 as a Private for the war under Capt. Wafford. Serving as Sgt, he was at the siege of Vicksburg and was present at the surrender July 7, 1863. After his parole at Vicksburg he was hospitalized at Marion, Alabama and following a long convalescence which lasted until September 1864 he re-enlisted with his old Unit which had removed to Alabama. At the battle of Blakely, Alabama he was re-captured April 9, 1865 and sent to Ship Island. Ship Island was a prison which had very poor conditions and was a place from which many men never returned. Jefferson Williams survived his ordeals, returned to Holmes County to live out the remainder of his life. He died in 1897 and was buried at Franklin Cemetery with his family. He fathered 14 children. His tombstone is inscribed with a Confederate Cross of Honor.
