Agustus/Gustavus (Gus) Leo Bennett was a French-Canadian man who came to America from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. His parents were Agustus Bennett and Mary McKay Bennett. He once worked as an Ice Man in Weymouth delivering frozen blocks of Ice to the public and came to meet his wife, Rose. Rose Valerie Lissy (who came from Austria/Germany in 1904) married Gus on April 16, 1907 in the Immaculate Conception Church in East Weymouth, MA - at the time, he was approx. 25 years old. Together they had 5 children: a son-John F. Bennett (1909-1982), 1 set of twins (1911): Elizabeth M. Bennett (1911-1999) & Agnes F. Bennett (1911-1998); another son-Charles W. Bennett (1913-1963) & a little girl-Augustina (Christina) Helen Bennett, who was born on August 11, 1916, after her father's death. On the morning of Tuesday, November 23, 1915 at at the age of 34, while working as a Carpenter's Helper for the Aberthaw Construction Company of Boston erecting a plate & angle building for the Fore River Ship Yards, Gus was killed from the collapse of a staging 40 feet in the air on which the men were working. His foreman, Thomas Barry of Dorchester was also killed and seriously injured was a co-worker: Geno Novelli. Gus was buried on Thursday, November 26, 1915 at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. At the time, Gus & Rose and the children lived at 180 Liberty Street, South Quincy, MA. Rose remained a Widow the rest of her life, working hard as a Housekeeper to raise the 5 children by herself. She died at the age of 62 years old of Cerebal Vascular Thrombosis due to Diabetes on March 15, 1946 at the Boston City Hospital & was buried in the New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan, MA. There is no record remaining of Gus' burial in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, & no marked grave can be found; but his Death Certificate records his burial there. Gus and Rose Bennett are my beloved Grandparents & Augustina (who went by the name of Christina (nickname: Gussy) Helen (Bennett) Young is my dearest Mother, who died March 3, 1978 from a Heart Attack at St. Joseph's Hospital, Houston, Harris County, TX, and was buried at the Friendship Cemetery in Milam County, Texas, beside my Father, Woodrow Ferguson "Mutt" Young.
