William Henry Currier was born on August 17, 1830 in Amesbury, Massachusetts, son of Enoch and Louisa Currier. He married Roxanah Reed, daughter of Isaac and Eunice Tibbetts Reed of Salisbury on June 20, 1853. Roxanah was born in Salisbury on June 26, 1832. William and Roxanna had seven children: Ann Elizabeth (1854), Charles William (1855), Eldridge F. (1857), George Stevens (1858), Eunice R. (1860), Louisa E. (1865), and Sarah F. (1869). William Currier, a shoemaker by trade, was a conscript private in the 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery on August 13, 1864. He mustered out on June 28, 1865. On May 15, 1851, The Massachusetts Legislature passed an act granting Boards of Selectmen the authority to appoint Police Officers. William Henry Currier was the first police officer appointed in the Town of Salisbury, Massachusetts on March 19, 1860. Massachusetts State Police Chief Constable Edward J. Jones appointed William Currier as a state police deputy constable for Essex County in June of 1867. In the 1870 Census he was living in Salisbury and listed his occupation as “shoe factory.” In the 1880 Salisbury Census he listed his occupation as Policeman. William H. Currier died at age 58 on July 5, 1888 in Amesbury. He was a member of the G.A.R. Post #122, E.P. Wallace, in Amesbury. His wife Roxana died at age 84 on July 16, 1916 in Amesbury.
