WINNEBAGO, Neb. Howard T. Bassette Sr., 85, of Winnebago passed away Saturday, February 20, 2016. Howard was a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, and his Ho-Chunk name was Hesgega Maniga, which means "Walks in Truth." Services were held on Wednesday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Winnebago, with the Rev. David Korth officiating. Burial took place at the Winnebago Indian Cemetery, where he was laid to rest next to his wife. Visitation took place at the HoChunk Center in Winnebago, with Roland Warner in charge. Arrangements were under the direction of Winnebago Wake and Funeral. Howard was born on July 18, 1930, to Allie Hunter and Horace Bassette. Howard attended Marty Indian School up to the sixth grade. Howard married Pamelia Alice Earth in 1951. They were married for 52 years and had eight children. The couple lived in Waukegon, Ill., and Denver, Colo. They returned to Winnebago, where they raised their family. Howard retired after 30 years of service from the Village of Winnebago as the director of maintenance and water operations. Howard was an active and lifelong member of the St. Augustine's parish, where he was an usher for several years. Howard often arrived at the church before the priest, and Father Steve Boes gave Howard his own key to the church in the early 1990's. Father Boes asked Howard to make sure the parish doors were always open and that the lights and heat were on before parishioners began arriving for mass on Sundays. Howard enjoyed working on cars, going to Winn-A-Vegas on Friday nights, telling a good joke, and both kinds of music, country and western. More than anything, though, Howard loved spending time with his family. Howard was a unique and special dad, grandfather and uncle. He had a way of making you feel like you were his favorite and when pressed, each of the kids would insist they were indeed the favored child. Howard was very proud of his family and he loved to hear about their adventures and escapades. Howard died peacefully at Heritage Nursing Home in Emerson, Neb., and he spent his last days surrounded by family. Howard is survived by his children, Gloria (Joseph) O'Shogay of Winnebago, Howard (Maribeth) Bassette Jr. of Laurel, Neb., Holly (Joe) Post of New Post, Wis., and Gregory (Cheryl) Bassette Sr., Darryl Bassette, and Julie Bassette, all of Winnebago. Howard and his wife also raised two grandchildren, Keely (Bradley) Purcell of Sioux City and Anthony Bassette Sr., of Winnebago; and one great-grandson, Anthony Bassette Jr. who is currently stationed at Aviano Air Force Base in Aviano, Italy. Howard had 22 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 44 great-great grandchildren; and six great-great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, Howard is survived by his brother, Benny Edward Vincent (Gloria) Pretends Eagle of Winnebago; and two sisters, Catherine Frenchman of Winnebago and Sharon Frenchman of Albuquerque, N.M. Howard is also survived by his brother-in-law Warner Earth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
