NEWPORT NEWS — Edward Mabin Wagner Sr., 77, passed away to be with our Lord, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Mary Immaculate Hospital.
He was born in Orange Co., N.C., on May 4, 1923, attended school in Hillsborough, N.C., and came to Newport News in 1942 to attend the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. Apprentice School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, retired from civil service at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station in 1973, was an active member of First United Methodist Church, had been a Mason for 53 years, having served as Worshipful Master of Peninsula Lodge No. 278 in 1976 and District Deputy in 1984 and served as secretary of Bremond Lodge No. 241 for several years. Ed was also a member of McMahon Lodge No. 303, Scottish Rite, Royal Arch, and the Shriners. He had been a member of Emera Chapter No. 31, O.E.S. since 1951, having served in several offices and was currently serving as a member of the Board of Governors of The Eastern Star Home in Richmond.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie Barnes Wagner of Newport News; one daughter, Linda Wagner Anderson and her husband, Bob, of Yorktown; one son, Edward M. Wagner Jr. of Newport News; one grandson, Sam Anderson of Yorktown; one brother, Stroud Wagner of Rougemont, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Masonic Rites will be conducted 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at The Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel by Bremond Lodge No. 241, after which the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. John T. LeGault Jr. Interment will be in New Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, next to his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star Home, the Scottish Rite Community Relations or your favorite charity.
