When war came in 1861, Lafayette Sproles served in Co. D, 1st Mississippi Light Artilery Regiment, C.S.A., which was mustered in Holmes Co., MS. He served in this unit with his father, brothers, and cousins. His unit was engaged in the battle of Vicksburg.

In 1880, Lafayette is listed living in Durant, Holmes Co., MS as a carpenter. He moved his family to AR about 1883. The children of Wilson Lafayette - Mary Sproles were: Olivia, Mary L., Rosa Blanche, Maude Elizabeth, Mandy, Eva, Wilson R., Esther, Ethel, Ruth, and Annie Sproles.
