Stephen P. Killough of Holland, PA died peacefully on Friday, July 29, 2016, at Chandler Hall Hospice, Newtown. He was 80.
He was the beloved husband of Deborah M. Spitler Killough for 53 years.
Born in Terrell, TX, he was the son of the late Isaac F. Killough and Grace L. Yarbrough Harrell.
Mr. Killough was a resident of Holland for 37 years.
Mr. Killough graduated from La Vega High School in Waco, Texas in 1953. He earned a B.A. in English and History from Baylor University in 1957 and Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctorate degrees from Cumberland School of Law of Samford University in 1960.
He was admitted to practice law in the State of Texas in 1960 and remained a member of the State Bar of Texas until his death. He was also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1963.
Mr. Killough was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army in 1960. He served on active duty as an infantry officer and as staff judge advocate of the XXI Army Corps until 1964. He attained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Army Commendation medal. He continued his service in the Army Reserve until he was honorably discharged in 1969.
After leaving active duty in the Army, Mr. Killough held the position of City Attorney of Amarillo, Texas. He later entered the private practice of law, working for various firms and corporate legal departments. In 1978, he became Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Manufacturers Hanover Financial Services. He held the same position for Resource One Mortgage, Inc., from which he retired in 2007.
Mr. Killough was a member of the American Bar Association, the American Finance Services Association (director, chairman real estate advisory group 1984, vice chairman law forums), and the National Consumer Finance Association (chairman real estate subcommittee). He was a Son of the American Revolution and a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church.
Mr. Killough was an accomplished amateur genealogist who authored and published the book “The Killough Family” in 1969. In addition to genealogy, he enjoyed writing mystery books, reading history and literature, landscape and portrait painting, and gardening. He was an avid sportsman—having been a triple letter winner in high school (baseball, football and basketball) and having played on the Baylor Bears basketball j.v. team. He loved and cared for all children.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth V. Scheg Bradbury and her husband, Thomas, of Yardley, PA and his son, Richard C. Killough and his wife, Katie, of Fulshear, TX. He is also survived by his brother, Edward F. Killough of Houston, TX and three loving grandchildren, Emalyn Scheg, Wyatt Killough and Tristan Killough.
